Once the registrar changes your status in university systems from a current student to an alum, your access to our online resources and several services will change. Here’s what you’ll need to know:
First, be sure to return any books you have checked out. You can check My Library Account for books borrowed from us and ILLiad for books borrowed from other libraries. My Library Account will also show if you have any unpaid fines; you’ll need to clear those up to ensure you receive your diploma.
Assuming you have nothing currently checked out, your record will soon be removed from our system, meaning you won’t be able to use your Hokie Passport to check out items. If you have a Virginia ID like a driver’s license, you can get a borrower’s card to use instead.
Once you are no longer listed as a current student in the university’s system, you will no longer be able to log in to ILLiad and use interlibrary loan services. We recommend making use of your local public library’s services.
Similarly, once your status changes from a current student, you will no longer be able to remotely access our online subscription resources. You can continue to use free databases and open access databases, and you can continue to use most online resources while on a library computer, including those at the Northern Virginia Center.
We do license a select few databases for use by alumni. The Alumni Library Portal lists those databases, links to public library resources by state, and links to our lists of free databases. To access our licensed databases, you’ll continue to log in with your PID and password and use your second factor to authenticate as a Virginia Tech alum. That means you’ll need to keep your password up to date along with your second factor options.
