Extended campus users' book requests made easier

ServicesExtended campus users are those who reside outside the New River Valley counties of Montgomery, Giles and Pulaski. Those users can request books be mailed to their home address through ILLiad, our interlibrary loan service. (ILLiad is also used to obtain materials not owned by the Virginia Tech Libraries; this same service is also available to local customers.) A link that now appears in Addison makes it much easier for extended campus users to request books from the Virginia Tech Libraries' collection.

Extended campus users should first My Library Account in Addison using their name and Hokie Passport number (login to the myVT portal to look up your ID number if you do not know it). Once you have logged in, search Addison as usual: using keywords, authors, titles, etc. When you are viewing the complete record of a book (typically by clicking the title link on a search results screen), you should see a Extended campus users can Request from ILLiad link in the External Links box on the right side of the screen. Use this link to connect to the ILLiad service; login with your ILLiad account information to be presented with a filled-out book request form. Verify the information and submit the request.

The link only appears on books (not videos, journals or other formats), and only on books that could be checked out: those with an Available status or with a Due Date. Available items should quickly get picked up and mailed out. Checked out items are recalled by interlibrary loan staff; these are mailed as soon as they are returned. Login to ILLiad to view the status of any outstanding requests.

Extended campus users can also use ILLiad in a more traditional sense: to request books not owned by the Virginia Tech Libraries. One way to make requesting these books easier is to search WorldCat from FirstSearch, again using keywords or known information like authors or titles. View the complete record for the book in question and look for Libraries that own item link (if Virginia Tech has a copy, it should be indicated here). If the Virginia Tech Libraries do not own a copy, look for the Get VText button. Use this button and skip to Step 3 to request the book through ILLiad.
